Our Mission for Equity in La Crosse, WI, & Beyond

The Arc of La Crosse in Wisconsin believes that all people with intellectual and developmental disabilities are defined by their own strengths, abilities, and inherent value, not by their disability. Our non-profit organization focused on promoting equity, community, and self-determination for all people. We believe in the benefits of diversity and do not believe in restricting access to these values because of a disability.

Equity & Diversity

At The Arc of La Crosse, we believe that people with intellectual and developmental disabilities are entitled to the respect, dignity, equality, safety, and security accorded to other members of society, and are equal before the law. Everyone should receive equity, as this is a natural human right. A core value of our non-profit organization is that society benefits from the contributions of people with diverse personal characteristics.

Community

Another core value held is that people with intellectual and developmental disabilities belong in the community and have fundamental moral, civil, and constitutional rights to be fully included and actively take part in all aspects of society. Often, people with disabilities need community-based long-term supports and services, and our non-profit organization aims to make this help accessible to anyone who requires it.

Self-Determination

Self-determination and self-advocacy are incredibly important. With resources and supports, people with intellectual and developmental disabilities can make decisions about their own lives and must be heard on issues that affect their well-being. We strive to help them achieve this personal freedom so they can have independence and be supported in their own choices.

An Ongoing Battle

We established the core values of our non-profit organization as reminders of what we’re fighting for. Our goal is not simply to support; at The Arc of La Crosse, we want to create change. We are always pushing to make society see what is required for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and how we need to come together to provide the legal, societal, and moral changes that they need. While we are based in La Crosse County, our goal is promoting national and even global change. Come by and speak with us if you want to learn more!
